What Garage Door Cables Do
On a torsion-spring door, a steel cable runs from each bottom corner of the door up to a drum on the spring shaft. As the springs turn the shaft, the cables wind onto the drums and lift the door evenly. On an extension-spring door, cables run through pulleys and work together with the springs. If one side loses its cable, the door is lifted from one corner only – that is why a broken cable so often leaves the door tilted or jammed in the tracks.
Common Cable Problems
- Frayed or rusted cables near the bottom brackets, where moisture collects.
- A cable that came off the drum after the door hit an obstacle or was forced.
- A snapped cable after a spring broke and the door dropped.
- Worn pulleys or bottom brackets that cut into the cable.
How We Repair Garage Door Cables
Cables are under spring tension, so the first step is always to secure the door and release the tension safely. We then replace the cables – normally both sides, so they wear evenly – check the drums, bottom brackets and pulleys, rewind the springs and test the balance of the door. If the door has come out of its tracks we take care of that at the same visit; read more about Off-Track Garage Door Repair.
